Fellowships
The Fellowship Scheme aims to support the professional development of practitioners and influencers to boost AMR workforce capacity. The Scheme encourages peer-to-peer learning, strong One Health communities of practice and communication within the highest levels of government to influence AMR policies. Fellows are primarily chosen from within public government institutions to directly build national capacity to respond to AMR.
Funding Priorities
Funding is allocated to Host Institutions or universities that have applied to mentor and train fellows in specific disciplines. Host Institutions receive a set amount of funding for each Fellow they mentor. Fellows are selected from Beneficiary Institutions or public institutions or workplaces of prospective candidates. Fellows are often tasked with supporting and training colleagues from their workplaces with the skills learned from the Fellowship.
- Professional development: the Scheme does not duplicate basic training but instead focuses on building advanced scientific and leadership skills that practitioners can apply in high-level settings.
- Capacity Development: training and mentoring programmes focus on the Fellows’ professional needs while supporting them with advanced on-the-job training.
- One Health Approach: all activities seek to complement and strengthen One Health linkages by bringing together animal health and human health professionals.
Fellowship Cohorts
- Professional Cohort 1: The first cohort of professional Fellows are selected based on their existing expertise in AMR surveillance and data use. The programme aims to improve Fellows’ ability to generate and use AMR/AMU and AMC data, improve data analysis and interpretation, strengthen One Health collaboration and support the dissemination of skills within their workplaces. Fellows are supported for a period of approximately 18 months to build their technical and leadership skills through mentorship, specialised training and participation in collaborative projects.
- Professional Cohort 2: In the second cohort, Fellows are selected similarly and given opportunities for professional development in specialised areas to support their careers and their workplaces. Cohort 2 supports learning in aquaculture, bioinformatics, clinical practice, health informatics, medical engineering and AMR/AMU and AMC surveillance. Cohort 2 Fellowships are expected to run for 9-12 months.
- Policy Fellows: Policy Fellowships are designed to strengthen national leadership in evidence-based policy development, advocacy and One Health collaboration. Policy Fellows are selected on a candidate’s existing expertise and leadership and influencing abilities. The programme supports national AMR governance, helps raise awareness within national governments about AMR issues and translates data and evidence into policy recommendations. Policy Fellowships are 6-12 months in duration and follow a modified recruitment and application process.

Expected Impact
The Fellowship Scheme aims to develop a global community of AMR leaders and experts who can meaningfully contribute to their national AMR response. Fellows will also help develop awareness amongst government ministers and policy makers about the need for action against AMR.
