The Professional Fellowship scheme aims to support the professional development of key practitioners in Fleming Fund countries, in both human health and animal health sectors, who play an important role in implementing AMR and AMU surveillance. The scheme will provide training, coaching and mentoring to improve Fellows' skills and leadership capacity in gathering quality AMR diagnostic data, AMR and AMU data collection and management, analysis and use of surveillance results.

Beneficiary Institutions & Fellowships:
AMR Laboratory Fellowship – Human Health at National Institute of Health
- Improving the quality of AMR diagnostic results including use of advanced diagnostic methods (as appropriate), and strengthening laboratory quality management systems
- Maintaining a national bio-repository of isolates from reference and surveillance laboratories and ensuring these are appropriately used
- Facilitating sharing of materials used for quality control (e.g. ATCC strains, antibiotic disks, SOPs, bench guidelines), and training and mentoring activities between human health and veterinary laboratories
- Contributing to the sustainability of quality laboratory and diagnostic systems by developing training expertise and implementing training programmes that support AMR surveillance in Pakistan
AMR Surveillance Fellowship – Human Health at National Institute of Health
- To produce scientifically robust evidence of AMR patterns and risk factors in human bacterial infections from AMR and AMU surveillance data
- To interpret this together with evidence from other sectors to inform future surveillance priorities
- To inform policies or actions to reduce AMR in Pakistan
- To contribute to the sustainability of AMR surveillance in Pakistan by developing training expertise and implementing training programmes
AMU Surveillance Fellowship – Human Health at National Institute of Health
- To strengthen the AMU surveillance system by supporting the collection of representative AMU data in hospital or healthcare facilities and producing scientifically robust evidence of AMU practices
- To facilitate the interpretation of the results of AMR surveillance in the context of an understanding of AMU
- To provide information to inform policies or actions regarding responsible AMU to reduce the threat of AMR in Pakistan, including improved antibiotic prescribing practices
- To contribute to the sustainability of AMU surveillance in Pakistan by developing training expertise and implementing training programmes
AMR Laboratory Fellowship – Animal Health at National Veterinary Laboratory
- Improving the quality of AMR diagnostic results including use of advanced diagnostic methods (as appropriate) and strengthening laboratory quality management systems
- Maintaining a national bio-repository of isolates sent from veterinary surveillance sites and ensuring these are appropriately used
- Facilitating sharing of materials used for quality control (e.g. ATCC strains, antibiotic disks, SOPs, bench guidelines), and training and mentoring activities on the diagnosis of bacteria-antibiotic combinations that are common to both sectors, between human health and veterinary laboratories
- Contributing to the sustainability of quality laboratory and diagnostic systems by developing training expertise and implementing training programmes that support AMR surveillance in Pakistan
AMR Surveillance Fellowship – Animal Health at National Reference Laboratory for Poultry Diseases
- To produce scientifically robust evidence of AMR patterns and risk factors in animals from AMR and AMU surveillance data
- To interpret this together with evidence from other sectors to inform future surveillance priorities
- To inform policies or programmes to reduce AMR in Pakistan
- To contribute to the sustainability of the AMR surveillance programme in Pakistan by developing training expertise and implementing training programmes
AMU Surveillance Fellowship – Animal Health at National Reference Laboratory for Poultry Diseases
- To design and implement AMU surveillance for priority animal production systems included in AMR surveillance, and produce scientifically robust evidence of AMU practices
- To strengthen the accuracy and completeness of AMU data reported by Pakistan to the World Organisation for Animal Health
- To facilitate the interpretation of the results of AMR surveillance in the context of an understanding of AMU in animals
- To provide information to inform policies or actions regarding responsible AMU to reduce the threat of AMR in Pakistan
- To contribute to the sustainability of AMU surveillance in Pakistan by developing training expertise and implementing training programmes
