The Fleming Fellowship Scheme: Transforming leadership in AMR
To start World AMR Awareness Week 2024 − with the theme ‘Educate. Advocate. Act now.’ − we highlight the Fleming Fellowship Scheme, which aims to advance the goals of the Fleming Fund by supporting the professional development of key practitioners and change-makers across Africa and Asia.
The UK Department of Health and Social Care’s Fleming Fund is a UK Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme tackling the global pandemic of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by strengthening surveillance systems in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Fellowship Scheme provides a unique opportunity for key health practitioners in selected LMICs to develop their knowledge, and learn new skills around the laboratory sciences, data generation, and use, providing evidence for decision-making.
During phase 1 of the scheme, over 180 fellows were selected and provided with an international mentor. Fellows gained enhanced skills and knowledge, and the chance to engage with one another across borders while working with internationally acclaimed institutions active in AMR policy and research. This report shows some of the impressive achievements made by fellows and their workplaces across sectors and countries, as well as their increasing positive reputation and influence in their country’s AMR response, as a result.
The increase in the sharing of AMR surveillance data, with 84% of fellows actively doing so, also speaks to the collaborative approach taken by the fellows. The result of this is evidenced by the Legacy Review Report demonstrating improved health practices at beneficiary institutions, as noted among clinicians. Beyond this, more fellows are participating in AMR governing bodies, costing, and budgeting for AMR and showing their engagement in policy implementation.
What is hard to capture from the data collection for this report are the personal and professional skills developed individually and together, working towards a common goal. The fellows’ confidence and growth enable them to make the change they want to see in the fight against AMR.
